Direct Messages

Chat in real-time with other users privately, with indicators for online presence and read status.

Direct Messages (DMs) provide private, real-time communication between you and other users on the Cognirivus network.

Starting a Chat

To start a private conversation with another user:

Navigate to their Profile page by clicking their handle anywhere in the app.
Click the Message button on their profile card.
This will open a direct message panel and create a conversation record.

Alternatively, you can go to Chat in the left sidebar and select a user from your active chats list.

Direct messages are fully real-time, built on Convex's subscription architecture:

Online Presence: Active users show a green indicator next to their avatar, indicating they are currently online.
Typing Indicators: See when the other person is typing a response.
Read Status: Keep track of what messages have been seen with cursors indicating the other user's read position.

Replies: Hover over a message and click the reply arrow to quote and reply to it, creating inline threads.
Reactions: Add emoji reactions (like 👍, ❤️, 😮, 😂) to react quickly without typing a message.
Message Editing/Deletion: You can edit or delete your own messages within 24 hours. Deleted messages display a "This message was deleted" placeholder.
